Our performance baby ‘Shibari Express’ is growing, and we want to focus more on performance ideas as part of the workshop, than on basic rope technique. So previous knowledge is useful but not mandatory. If you prefer to watch, we will always need free hands to hold a light, fog machine or navigate a camera…

We want to invite you to brainstorm with us, ideas or dramaturgy and how to try those on a small scale. You could also bring an instrument, books or other devices, which you always have wanted to tie up or perform with.

The scenes that we create explore theatre tools and can be happening-like, installational or movement based/choreographies. Its an experiment to involve poetic thoughts around rope work, and to have an open space situation to try Shibari for the stage. There will always be someone of our team, or other free floating participants to support you, unless you want to make a solo :)

Sounds all more challenging than it is..its about searching new forms and having fun!

Markus Öhrn’s Ghost Sonata Rehearsal Start

Just coming back from Warsaw. I was coaching Japanese rope bondage to actors from Nowy Teatr.

After a short introduction what traditional Shibari and my approach is, we got six actors into experimenting wildly with ropes and found funky ideas combining them with the text from ‘Ghost Sonata’.

Written by Swedish playwright  August Strindberg’s in 1907. At that time he was inspired by Beethovens Piano Sonata ‘Ghost Trio’, and wrote this somewhat spooky chamber play, dealing with mummies and social eval, invented from some hidden place of his mind.. Perfect for Markus and perfect for ropes I think.

The group was awesome  Normally I don’t suspend people who are totally new to ropes, but the energy was solid and there were two stuntmen in the room. One even a former Starwars stuntmen! :)

Here some rehearsal moments.

No Limits Festival

Reviving MARS ATTACKS!  Created by Theater Hora & das Helmi in Zürich, 2014.
Since than we have continued researching and performing with the Hora’s at Zirkus des Fortschritts last summer.
A festival at the Holzmarkt theatre, celebrating, rehearsing, eating and creating collectively at the Spree.
This time we worked on forms addressing life directing on stage. Messing with the narratives of American Beauty, L ‘après midi d’un faun and Hunger Games.
Gianni Blumer is a straight forward director, and plays Jennifer Lawrence at the same time.
Julia Häusermann turned me to tyrannosaurus rex, shredding and eating up my friends. Sweet and serious. The concept is to get confused and absorbed by the universe of the other. We infect each other as much as possible.  Becoming HORA and spread Helmiism.
Some of the results are shown these days in the triple series I can sleep when I am dead at the No Limits festival.

To work with the Hora’s always puts me in a special mode. Different on many levels from other performer-/working relationships. There is a lot to tell about this collaboration, for now just some photo impressions of our first encounter.

PAF – Performance with Virginia

Quick posting between cities.. I had a week off from filming the ‘Affenkönig’ in the Provence and took the train north to PAF (Performance Art Forum) in St. Erme, North France. A beautiful train ride through the country :)

I heard many good things about this place and for a while wanted to spend time in a sort of hippy artistic place, focussing on performance research and easy community living. PAF is more than that!
Almost by chance I met Virginia Barratt, a so dear friend of mine, and writer from Australia.
We hadn’t seen for a while, and when I arrived she sat in the garden of the old women’s monastery, as if waiting for me ;)
Spontaneously we wanted to do something something.. Throwing together ideas around ballet, rope and text,
(she currently writes her PhD on ‘PANIC’ – wow & wuff). On my last day we showed what we had in an old chapel.

Kotoba Shibari
